Grade-Level Placement
Chronological Age
When enrolling a student, Bellevue Union School District will consider the student's chronological age and previous educational experience when determining appropriate grade-level placement.
- Verify the student's date of birth and age at the time of enrollment.
- Use the grade-level placement chart to identify the student's age-appropriate grade level.
- Apply the following state requirements for TK, Kindergarten, and First Grade:
- A child must turn 4 years old on or before September 1 of the school year to be eligible for Transitional Kindergarten.
- A child must turn 5 years old on or before September 1 of the school year to be eligible for Kindergarten.
- A child must turn 6 years old on or before September 1 of the school year to be eligible for First Grade.
Previous Academic Records and Educational Experience
For students transferring from another school, Bellevue Union School District will review available educational records and prior school placement when determining the most appropriate grade level. Records may include, but are not limited to:
- Grade reports and report cards
- Enrollment records
- Official transcripts, when applicable
- Other relevant educational records
Students who have been legally enrolled in a public school in another district or state may be placed in the grade level they attended at their previous school, at the discretion of Bellevue Union School District and in accordance with California Education Code.
If the student's previous grade-level placement differs from the age-appropriate placement indicated above, the District may review the student's educational history and other relevant information to determine the most appropriate placement. Any subsequent grade-level adjustments will be made in accordance with applicable District policies and procedures.
Questions regarding grade-level placement that cannot be resolved at the school site will be referred to the appropriate District administrator for review and a final determination.
School Placement
Bellevue Union School District will make every effort to enroll students at their school of residence. However, enrollment may be affected by available space and capacity at a particular school or grade level.
When a student's school of residence is unable to accommodate enrollment at a specific grade level, the District may assign the student to another District school with available space. When making placement decisions, the District will consider factors including:
- Available space and capacity
- Sibling enrollment
- The student's school of residence
- Other relevant family or student circumstances
School placement decisions will be made in accordance with applicable District policies and procedures.
