Child Nutrition Services

The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well-being and their ability to learn.  We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.  Meals, foods, and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements, which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines.  We provide students with the access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

Cooking on Site

As many small districts had done to save money and focus on core subjects BUSD outsourced their breakfast and lunch preparation to a larger district, food was made elsewhere and prepped onsite. Even larger districts had centralized their cooking and only prepped at school sites to streamline and save money.

Through the first LCAP process in 2013-14 the BUSD School Board and community decided making food on site at the schools was a priority worth investing in. The functioning prep kitchens had to be upgraded to current commercial kitchen standards, much like your home kitchen, while adequate for preparing dinner for your family would not be appropriate for catering meals for 400 school children.    Bellevue Elementary was selected as a test case. In 2014 the kitchen at Bellevue was upgraded, re-licensed, a cook hired and the school year started with a new, in house, menu (including school garden ingredients when possible) and lauded as a success. The kitchen at Meadow View followed in 2015 and Taylor Mountain in 2016. The goal had been to renovate the kitchen at Kawana Springs next in 2017, but renovation was rescheduled due to unforeseen maintenance projects, infrastructure requirements, as well as budget constraints.  The kitchen at Kawana is part of the current Maintenance & Operations 3-5 year Facility Plan. Necessary plumbing/sewer infrastructure upgrades where completed summer 2020, with architecture plans completed summer 2021, and the demolition of the existing Kawana cafeteria scheduled for summer of 2022.
