The Department of Business Services oversees the development and management of the district's budget. The department works closely with county and state agencies in order to ensure all regulations are adhered to. The district also conducts an annual audit using an independent firm for this purpose. The annual budget is presented to the Board each June for adoption.
Joel is a Certified Chief Business Official (CBO) by the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO). He is a graduate of the University of Southern California (USC) Rossier School of Education School Business Management Program and received a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management from the University of Washington. Prior experience in school business includes working for the San Mateo-Foster City School District, as well as working with the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, the Chula Vista Elementary School District and Mira Costa College. He has extensive experience in both public and private sector financial management, as well as in contracts and operations administration.

Vanessa Beckett moved to Sonoma County from San Diego in 2013 and has been with BUSD since early 2016. She has earned two separate degrees in Accounting and Business. Since 2008 she has worked in large school districts serving in the Payroll, APY and Budget departments. Prior to 2008, she worked as a Finance Assistant to the Controller for a nonprofit organization which served the education field. Currently, she is in progress of completing Sonoma County Office of Education’s Payroll Certification program.

Teresa Gomez joined BUSD in summer 2016. She has worked as a loan officer, customer service manager, credit manager among a variety of other jobs. These have all benefited her in her current position as our bilingual receptionist/APY.
